What are dental veneers and how are they different from teeth whitening?

If you are one of the people who has teeth with some breakage, separation, blackened parts, or discoloration, you are at the moment of taking the step to one of the most effective and economical remedies to improve the appearance of your smile. This cosmetic solution for your mouth is called dental veneers.

What are dental veneers?

Dental veneers are a coating used on teeth to improve their appearance. As professionals in dental services, we must clarify that this type of intervention is strictly aesthetic and does not provide a solution to any other type of dental problem that is not of aesthetic origin.

The placement of dental veneers does not replace any tooth, it simply disguises the problem. Of course, they do not correct the position either, that is, if a piece is separated, the veneer will cover the space. It is not a substitute for the use of classic orthodontics or INVISALIGN® invisible orthodontics.

Types of dental veneers

Depending on the type of veneer that is going to be used, it is necessary to prepare the tooth in one way or another, although it is always necessary to file some teeth to leave space to insert the paste that will form the veneer and that when it hardens, it will remain fixed to the tooth. .

Depending on the quality of the veneer, it has a type of maintenance and result, having broadly two groups of dental veneers:

Composite veneers

They are made of a moldable resin according to the needs of the patient. These types of veneers are inexpensive but are less resistant than porcelain. There are in turn two types, those that are placed directly on the tooth or the prefabricated ones and that are then placed on the tooth.

It is a well-priced solution to improve an unsightly mouth but they have fewer guarantees than porcelain ones and you may have to invest in keeping your veneers ready over time.

Ceramic veneers

Of much better quality than the previous ones, less economical but they do not require any maintenance. These veneers are manufactured in laboratories and in 98% of cases the tooth needs to be prepared for placement. Apart from their low maintenance, they are much more aesthetic than those of composite, because they adapt better to the color and brightness of the rest of the teeth.

Dental veneers vs teeth whitening

After knowing a little more about dental veneers, surely you have doubts about which aesthetic treatment is more effective to eliminate those oral defects that spoil your smile. Both treatments will improve your oral aesthetics, but the suitability of each of them depends on each patient.

In the case of teeth whitening, it is more effective for the removal of deep stains that have been caused by external factors, achieving immediate results and also, it can be done together with other aesthetic treatments such as veneers.

On the other hand, veneers allow modifying anomalies in the placement, separation or size of the teeth. This system is very effective when, due to intrinsic causes, the teeth are dark, yellow or with very deep stains.
