How to report an NPI number

A National Provider Identifier (NPI) number is an identification number needed by healthcare professionals, dentists, and social workers in order to bill insurance companies for services rendered. Each provider is issued a unique number in the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System and an NPI number is required by the federal government for all providers who are reimbursed by health insurance companies for their services.

NPI numbers need to be reported to individual insurance companies; This can be done online, by phone, or by fax.

Instructions

1 Locate your provider NPI number using a free online NPI number database, such as the National Provider Indentifier database, at http://www.hmedata.com/npi.asp. Use the provider’s first and last address, state, and office to locate the NPI number.

2 Visit the website of the insurance company to use your existing login information or create an account. Enter the NPI number when prompted.

3 Provide the NPI number when calling the insurance company with claims status to expedite claims and receive reimbursement.

4 Fax to the NPI number with each fax claim form for reimbursement.
